The is a large spread in pricing which is due to a couple of variables. The most important factor is how many months in advance you are willing to pay. The further out you go (6 months is the max) the lower your price. Yahoo also offers two different levels of paid membership, Yahoo Personals and Yahoo Personals Premier.

For free you get…

Yahoo Personals allows you to look around at profiles for free. The base view gives you a look at one thumbnail picture and a quick snippet of text. Once you submit a profile, you are able to view a bit more, but like almost all of the other service, you don’t get access to much until you upgrade to the paid membership. An “icebreaker” feature is also included to let someone know that you’re interested in finding out more about them.

The exact number of members on Yahoo Personals is tough to figure out, but keep in mind that more people visit Yahoo than any other site on the planet. It goes to reason that Yahoo Personals should have an extensive data base.

Sign up could not be easier. If you already have a Yahoo ID, either through yahoo mail or just for having a yahoo homepage, then you’re ready to go. If not, sign up for a Yahoo ID. It’s free.

One great feature is the search feature, with the option to limit your database to within 5 miles of your zip code. As an example, I live in a very small town, and when I search for a woman aged 30-40 within 5 miles of my house, Yahoo returns 52 different profiles. Quite impressive.

Yahoo offers a relationship test for you to take to try and help match your compatibility, and this test only takes about 5 minutes to complete. One other option that Yahoo gives you is the ability to send a customized “ice breaker” message to initiate contact.

The Premier service offers an advanced matchmaking system and access to a “restricted” membership base. It also gives you the option to instant message with other singles.

One downside to Yahoo Personals is the limited technology it offers. Unlike other sites which offer multiple avenues like chat, video instant messaging, groups, and blogs, Yahoo only offer correspondence through email and instant messaging. Instant Messaging is only offered through the highest paid membership plan.

In spite of the limited technology, Yahoo Personals is still highly recommended. The sheer number of members in addition to its fantastic search ability make up for some of the sites other short comings. Visit their site and check it out for yourself.
